All five traditional councils in the Mfantseman District of the Central Region that formed the "Borbor Fante" will on August 25, hold a grand durbar to round-off Ghana's Independence Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The durbar, which is expected to be addressed by President J.A. Kufuor, will also be used to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the United Gold Coast Convention, which was formed in Saltpond.
Nana Ataapim Kweenu VIII, Mankrado of Nkusukum and Chairman for the festival planning committee said that the durbar would be the first of its kind and intended to unite the people for accelerated development.
It will be held on the theme: "Developing Mfantseman District in unity".
The five traditional areas, which migrated from Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region were Mankessim, Ekumfi, Anomabo, Nkusukum and Abeadze Dominase. They were led by three warriors, Obrumankoma, which had a whale as its symbol, Odapagyan with an Eagle symbol, and Oson, which carries the symbol of an elephant.
Nana Kweenu said although Kwamankese and Abora traditional areas were among the Borbor Mfantse, they belonged to Abora Asebu Kwamankese District and therefore would not take part in the durbar.
He said the bust of the founding fathers of the UGCC would be unveiled at the durbar.
Nana Kweenu who is also the Presiding Member of the Mfantseman District Assembly said through the efforts of Mr. Steven Asamoah Boateng, Member of Parliament for Mfantseman West, the portraits of the three warriors and their symbols had been erected at the Mankessim roundabout to remind the youth of the role they played in bringing the Borbor Fante to their present abode.
He said even though Obrumankoma and Odapagyan died on the way leaving only Oson to lead the people to Mankessim, they deserved an honour.
