The Brong-Ahafo Region recorded 68 deaths from 152 road crashes between January – April, as compared to 60 deaths from 158 road crashes within the same period last year. Among the deceased were 52 men, seven of them below 18 years and 16 women, five of them below 18 years, while last year 41 men five of them under 18 years and 19 women seven of them under 18 years died. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Paul Wesley Baah, Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) Commander in an interview with GNA in Sunyani on Monday said there was a marked reduction of 3.1 per cent. He said 168 vehicles were involved during the quarter, made up of 114 commercial vehicles and 54 private while 178 vehicles made up of 116 commercial vehicles and 62 private were involved in 2012. DSP Baah said there was a 5.1 percentage decrease in 2013, however, road crashes involving motorbikes increased by 52 per cent with 48 cases recorded in 2013 as against 23 cases recorded in 2012. He said 53 of the road crashes were fatal, 43 were serious and 56 were minor in 2013 as against 40 fatal, 47 serious and 71 minor road crashes last year. DSP Baah noted that in percentage terms, fatal road crashes in 2012 increased by 32.5 in 2013 but serious road crashes decreased by 8.5 in 2013 while minor road crashes decreased by 21 per cent in 2013. The Regional MTTU Commander said 30 pedestrians were knocked down within the period in 2013 as compared to 39 in 2012, representing a decrease of 23 per cent. He said 221 people received injuries during the quarterly review as compared to 269 in 2012, signifying 17.8 per cent decrease.
