Rev. Gabriel Ansah, the Senior Pastor of "Nasem University", says he sees no problem with people dancing ‘Azonto’ in and out of church in appreciation of what God has done for them.
He said that the meaning of the dance must properly be defined before passing judgement on it.
“We need to find out whether it’s obscene, nude or indecent. Is it the beat, the style, the gesturing or the expression that we need to find out?” he said.
“I have heard people [say] the way the youth throw their hands in the air and touch their body, if someone touches his or her own body, what it is to any other person?” he quizzed.
Rev. Nelson Yaw Ekor of the Global Evangelical Church has described the most spreading dance across the African continent and beyond, Azonto, as sexually suggestive and opting for it to be banned in churches.
But Rev. Gabriel Ansah who revealed that he loves to watch the Azonto moves by the youth said he sees nothing wrong with the dance.
“How did David dance before the ark of the Lord to the displeasure of his concubines?” he asked, adding, “the Bible said that he even went half naked. And the Bible has said that whatever we do, whether we eat or drink or dance, we should do all to the glory of God,” he stated.
According to the popular radio preacher, the only problem he has with the Azonto is the lyrics of circular Azonto songs.
“If it is the beat, I don’t have any problem because now we dance to the tune of Reggae, Highlife and Adowa which have been adopted in the Christian circle. So I don’t see anything wrong with the style, the beat, and tune of Azonto”.
Rev. Ansah said the call to ban Azonto in churches is unnecessary until the meaning is known.
“Until we establish the source or the meaning of Azonto, we cannot condemn it. Who knows the meaning of Reggae, Highlife and Adowa…Adowa originated from the fetish priest and their gods but now it is being dance in churches.”
“If you want to condemn beat, then you must first condemn reggae, highlife and Adowa beats,” he said.
Speaking on XFM 95.1, Rev. Gabriel Ansah said almost all Azonto beat producers are real born again Christians.
“There is no dancing style for Christians,” he noted.
