Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas has described the National Chief Imam as an iconic, born leader who personifies humility at a lecture organised to mark the 100years birthday of the Muslim cleric.

“To many of us who have been close to him, we affectionately call him ‘Malam Osman’. He is humility personified, for, in spite of all the high titles he has rightfully earned and deserves, he is comfortable when you call him ‘Malam Osma.’ Such is the simplicity of the man we are celebrating today,” Dr. Chambas told his audience who responded with applause.

According to the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, the National Chief Imam, Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu is an iconic personality who has touched the world with his Prayers, guidance and wise counseling.

The lecture at the Movinpeak Hotel in Accra under the auspices of the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is only one of many activities earmarked to celebrate the life of the revered Islamic cleric.

According to Alhaji Khuzaima Osman who is the Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam, some of the activities include blood donation at the residence of the chief imam in collaboration with the 37 military hospital, Health Walk, Quranic Recitation and Special Prayers.

Extolling the virtues of the National Chief Imam, Dr. Chambas said “today we celebrate the Chief Imam” who is a spiritual leader, father and nation builder.

He added that the Chief Imam is a Unifier who “unifies Muslims and Christians.” According to him this credential of the national chief Iman was recently demonstrated when he worshipped with Christians at the Christ the King Parish, in Accra, on Easter Sunday.

Rev. Andrew Campbell described the visit to the church as indicative of the peaceful co-existence between Christians and Muslims.

The National Chief Imam was born at Old Fadama on April 23, 1919. His ancestors are of Hausa ethnicity from Northern Nigeria. He has been the national chief Imam of Ghana since 1993.

National Chief Imam or Grand Mufti of Ghana, "or simply" Chief Imam is a de facto title for the highest Muslim religious authority in Ghana.

Dr. Charmbas said that since the national chief Imam assumed office “he has brought added meaning to the position, elevated it beyond the remit of worship through his involvement and impact in different aspect of our lives.”

According to him “his role as the National Chief Iman has provided spiritual leadership to the Muslim community and indeed to the whole nation.”
