Civil servants have warned they will resist the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure in its current form.
They say the policy will erode the benefits they enjoy under the Ghana Universal Salary Structure and result in huge distortions in salary.
“We have sat down and analysed the policy and what it is supposed to achieve. Though it is laudable, the starting point is a problem and it is a problem and likely to erode whatever we gained on the Ghana Universal salary structure,” Ekow Amissah, Acting Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff association told Joy News’s Evans Mensah on Wednesday.
“The same distortion that we experienced in the Ghana Universal Salary Structure is rearing its ugly head in the single spine,” he added.
According to him, the present state of the salary structure will be at their disadvantage and warned they might be forced to hit the streets if government failed to address their grievances.
He said the Greater Accra Regional Branch of the Association, unhappy with the current state of the policy sent a petition to the Employment Minister, E.T Mensah with their red arm bands to register their protest.
He feared the other regional associations will soon take a cue from their parent body if government fails to act.
But the Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages Commission, George Smith Graham said the action by the leadership of the civil servants association is unfortunate.
He explained the commission met with the civil servants on two occasions in which the leadership raised a number of issues.
He said the commission was considering re-evaluating some of the jobs under the SSSS and is liaising with all the stakeholders concerned using the due process.
He said an independent consultant has been contracted to do the revaluation, insisting the protests by the Civil servants are premature.
Meanwhile a labour consultant, Austin Gameh is calling for a truce between all the stakeholders to ensure a smooth implementation of the salary structure.
He said the concerns being raised by both parties are not in conformity with the labour act.
