The Coalition of NGOs in health say a strategy by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to tackle the growing trend of maternal mortality and new born deaths in the country will not achieve significant results.According to the health sector NGOs, an attempt by the Service to revise its initial strategy to meet Millennium Development Goal (MDG)-5, is not the answer to the teething problems facing maternal health in the short term.Michael Boadi, Head of Advocacy at the Coalition of NGO’s in Health, believes lack of personnel should be a key consideration in efforts to improve maternal mortality and child deaths. He also charged the health service to make conditions attractive "for doctors to want to go places like the Northern Region".The health service's current strategy is to improve maternal health at both community and health care facility levels through the use of evidence-based, feasible and cost effective interventions. But the health service is seeking to revise this strategy because most hospitals in the country are still struggling to meet the deadline for the MDG despite some recorded progress.MDG-5 aims at reducing maternal mortality by three quarters and achieve universal access to reproductive health by 2015.
