Immunologist and Research Fellow at the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens, University of Ghana says the vaccination process in the country has so far been successful.
Dr Yaw Bediako on AM Show Thursday, stated that the conspiracy theories that were purported to bar people from taking the vaccine have not affected vaccine roll out.
In his view, the citizenry is responding quite well to the newly-developed drug.
“We have vaccinated a good number of people, considering the number of vaccines we received we have almost exhausted that supply and I think we have done so very quickly.
“Yes, the conspiracy theories are bound but I don’t really believe it has affected the roll out [of the vaccine] in Ghana. We don’t yet have saturation, it is not like we have millions of vaccines to give out and they were going to waste.
He continued, “We have handed out 500, 000 out of the 600, 000 that we received. So on the whole, you can give us quite a good grade as far as the roll out is concerned.”
Ghana on the 24th of February, 2021 became the 1st country under the COVAX scheme to receive vaccines.
Subsequently, President Akufo-Addo and his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo in the quest to allay fears amongst the public set the example by taking the first shot of the Covid-19 vaccine in the country.
To encourage people, Mr Bediako said the vaccine is safe for use.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service together with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) have been embarking on a rigorous sensitisation programme to clarify misinformation and myths about the vaccines ahead of 17.6 million doses Ghana is estimated to receive by June.
