The Constitutional Review Committee has proposed an extension of the presidential term of office from four years to five years, as part of recommendations aimed at strengthening governance and policy continuity.
The Chairman of the committee, Prof Prempeh, disclosed this on Monday, December 22, when the committee formally presented its work to the President at the Jubilee House.
The full details of the reasoning behind this proposal are yet to be made available to the public.
According to Prof Prempeh, the proposal is intended to create a more stable governance framework by allowing presidents adequate time to design, implement and consolidate long-term national policies without the constant pressure of frequent election cycles.
Prof Prempeh emphasised that the proposal does not undermine democratic accountability, noting that it is anchored on strengthening institutions, enhancing checks and balances, and promoting efficiency in public administration.
The President, in his response, commended the committee for what he described as a thorough and reflective review process, assuring members that the recommendations would be carefully studied and subjected to the necessary constitutional and public scrutiny.
The proposed extension of the presidential term is among several reforms contained in the committee’s report, which is expected to spark national debate ahead of any possible constitutional amendments.
