The Agona Swedru magistrate court has imposed a fine of two hundred and forty Ghana cedis on parents whose children of school going age were found buying and selling during school hours. This ruling follows the arrest of about 27 under aged street hawkers who were found trading during school hours at Agona Swedru. The Agona East Municipal Assembly and the Agona Swedru Traditional Area say the exercise is meant to discourage child labour and enforce responsible parenting.According to Joy FM’s Central Regional Correspondent, Richard Kojo Nyarko, the action is also to improve the falling standards of education in the area.Four schools in the municipality registered zero per cent in the just ended Basic Education Certificate Exams. The parents are liable to seven months prison term if they default in the payment.Source: Joy News/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
