Ghana beat Niger in spectacular fashion to meet Cape Verde in the quarter finals of the ongoing Nations Cup tournament in South Africa.
Asamoah Gyan scored his first tournament goal and set up two others as the Black Stars run rout over group underdogs Niger.
Its was Gyan who blasted it low and hard from near post after just seven minutes and credit to Adoma who delivered a sweet ball from the right.
Two minutes later the Nigeriens responded with a corner which was whipped in after Fatau Dauda spilled it from mid-air. The Nigeriens had their celebration cut short after referee whistled for a foul on Dauda. A harsh decision it was against the Nigeriens.
But it was the Stars who stepped up the gear with the Al Ain striker looking more sharp than he was in the last two games the Black Stars played. He was picked up on the left by Kwadwo Asamoah and spotting a great run from Atsu, the Black Stars striker curled in an inch perfect pass which Atsu controlled beautifully on his chest; took a snap shot at the goal keeper before delivering a little cheeky flick into the yawning net for Ghana’s second goal.
It looked more likely to be a goal harvest for the Stars and it took just two minutes after recess to confirm that.
John Boye, the most unlikely source, got Ghana’s third after he notched in a rebound from near post. The Nigerien goal keeper failed to grab a header from Gyan which took an awkward bounce in front of him. Boye reacted quickly to secure Ghana’s third.
Gyan had two great opportunities to increase his goal tally but the Al Ain striker had his feeble shot saved from close range and his second was a total miscue after being set up from the left.
A great team performance from the Stars and they will play Cape Verde at the quarter final stage of the competition on Saturday.
