Many of the fatal road accidents that occurred on the Kumasi-Sunyani road have been attributed to the numerous pot holes on that route.
The road, which is one of the busiest in the country and also links Ghana to La Cote D'ivoire, has not seen any repairs for ages. Despite the numerous accidents on the road, authorities have paid lip service to it.
Painstaking investigation by The Enquirer disclosed that there are about 1,000 horrible and sordid pot-holes on the road, just from Tabre to Bechem.
At Attakrom, a farming community along the road, school children were compelled to fill some of these pot holes with stones.
Most of the inhabitants at Mfensi, Dwenewoho, Mankranso, Attakrom and Dwinyama communities, also along the road, told the paper that they do not understand why the authorities have neglected the road, despite the numerous accidents and loss of life on it.
The exasperated inhabitants stated that the police now even use the "man-hole" like pot holes at Tweapease as a barrier to check drivers.
According to the drivers, this attitude of the police is frustrating and disturbing. "Instead of the police allowing us to concentrate on this dangerous road with rapt attention, they rather compound the situation for us," the unamused drivers claimed.
A situation, the Enquirer learnt, the drivers have on countless occasions resisted to no avai I. The people have consequently challenged the authorities to come out and explain publicly to them the use of the huge amount of money collected from drivers at the toll booth at Tabre.
The drivers and the traders who ply the route have further entreated the authorities to urgently find solutions to the potholes before they endanger the life of more people.
