The Ashanti Regional Director of the Department of Social Welfare, Mr Jacob Achulo, has advised the physically challenged to take advantage of the department's skills training programmes to become economically self-supporting.
He said they should avail themselves to be trained in carpentry, hair-dressing, shoe making and other trades at the Edwenase Rehabilitation Centre to enable them live dignified lives.
Mr Achulo condemned the situation where some of them begged for money at road traffic intersections exposing themselves to potential danger and said this must stop.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi on Thursday, he said the regional office of the Department in 2009, registered a total of 329 persons with disabilities. They were made up of 191 males 138 females.
Mr Achulo said 62 of them have been supplied with wheel chairs donated by the Jesus Christ of the Latter Days Saints Church.
He said the Department also supported the activities and programmes of the association for the physically disabled with an amount of about GH¢6,895.00 last year.
Mr Achulo appealed to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to abide by the government directive that they used five percent of their share of the Common Fund to help those with disabilities.
