The youth of Derma in the Tano South District of Brong-Ahafo have appealed to the government to rehabilitate the Asuoso-Techimantia feeder road to facilitate transportation of farm produce in the area.
Mr. Tweneboah Kodua, who spoke on behalf of the youth, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Derma that the 21 kilometre road was in a very deplorable condition and that had affected the social and economic activities of the people.
He said the state of the road had made it impossible for the people to cart their farm produce, some of which were going bad, to marketing centres, as commercial drivers had refused to ply the road.
Mr. Kodua, who is manages a pharmaceutical shop in the town, said the people, who were predominantly farmers cultivated tomatoes, cocoa, maize, plantain and cocoyam.
He mentioned Adaa, Ankaase, Derma, Toagyankrom, Kwakufikrom, Enkwakyire, Kwadwo Fordwourkrom and Techimantia-Nkwakyire as other farming communities that used the road.
The communities have made numerous appeals to the District Assembly to rehabilitate the road, as much revenue is generated in the communities, but to no avail.
“The people have started harvesting tomatoes in large quantities but the bad state of the road is not promoting the marketing of the produce”, he said.
Mr. Kodua appealed to the MP for the area, Mr. Andrew Adjei-Yeboah, to liaise with the government through the Assembly to rectify the situation.
He cautioned that the people would be compelled to advise themselves in this year’s elections if their plea was not heeded to.
