President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to appreciate and honour public servants while they are still serving, rather than waiting until tragedy strikes before recognising their sacrifices.
Speaking at the National Inter-Faith Memorial Service held in Accra to mark one year since the military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight state officials and military personnel, President Mahama said many public servants make significant sacrifices that often go unnoticed.
He said those who dedicate their lives to public service frequently endure difficult conditions, spend long periods away from their families and take risks because of their commitment to national development.
“Much of their work goes unnoticed. They travel long distances. They spend countless hours away from their families. They endure difficult conditions. They make decisions under pressure. They accept risks because they believe that Ghana’s progress is worth every effort,” he said.
The President said public servants play a critical role in protecting and advancing the country, but their efforts are often fully appreciated only after tragic events occur.
“And too often we celebrate such service only after tragedy strikes,” he said.
He urged Ghanaians to develop a culture of recognising dedication and sacrifice as public service is being performed daily.
“Today we must resolve to appreciate public service even as it is performed daily. To appreciate those who labour faithfully, often without recognition, because they believe in something that is greater than themselves,” President Mahama added.
Turning to the families of the eight victims of the helicopter crash, the President expressed condolences on behalf of the government and people of Ghana.
“To the bereaved families, let me once again convey the deepest condolences of the government and people of Ghana,” he said.
President Mahama acknowledged that no words or ceremony could completely remove the pain caused by the loss of their loved ones.
“I know that no speech can erase your pain,” he said.
The August 6, 2025 helicopter crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Environment, Science and Technology Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, security officials and Ghana Air Force personnel while they were travelling on official duty connected to efforts against illegal mining.
The first anniversary memorial service brought together government officials, religious leaders, members of the diplomatic community, security personnel and families of the deceased to honour their lives and sacrifices.
