A driver is alleged to have displayed rare boxing and head-butting skills when he encountered a female police officer and a military-man who were performing their official duties at Suhum Round-About in the Eastern Region.
This is the second time in four weeks that a driver has allegedly beaten law-enforcement personnel in the Eastern Region.
Narrating the incident to The Spectator on Monday, the Assistant Public Relations Officer for the Eastern Regional Police, Corporal Gideon Boateng, said on Friday, February 12, 2010, a team of police personnel and a military officer were dispatched to direct traffic and ensure law and order at the Suhum Round-About.
He said at about noon, the driver of a Ford Transporter vehicle with registration number SA 1201-09, which was being driven by a young-man at top speed, ignored the persistent signals from the police to stop.
He said the vehicle was over-speeding from Kumasi to Accra and nearly knocked down a pedestrian in the area.
The Assistant PRO said the policewoman managed to stop the vehicle but during interrogation the driver pounced on her (police-woman) and started beating her.
He said the military officer who was among the officers dispatched to control the traffic at the Round-About tried to question the driver why he should fight with a police officer.
He said, before the officer could open his mouth the driver had head-butted him twice, drawing blood from his nostrils. In further defiance of the law, the suspect allegedly jumped into his vehicle and sped away.
The Eastern Regional Police Public Relation Unit has started looking for the owner of the said vehicle to immediately report with the driver in question at the Suhum Police Station or the Regional police Depot.
The Unit is also appealing to the general public especially drivers, to be respectful of law enforcement agents and refrain from assaulting them.
The police are also urging drivers to behave professionally when driving because the roads are constructed for drivers and other users alike.
