The Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Nii Ephraim, has appealed to the USAID and Relief International to assist the Assembly to develop a modern waste disposal sites to recycle liquid and solid waste. He also pleaded that similar technologies are introduced to some secondary and tertiary institutions in the Municipality to help manage waste in the system. Nii Ephraim made the appeal at a Ghana Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) Project stakeholders meeting at Winneba. It was organized by Relief International, a Non-Governmental Organization, (NGO) and sponsored by USAID in partnership with the government. Participants, made up of assembly members were from for Agona East, Gomoa East and West, Awutu-Senya and Effutu. According to Nii Ephraim, if these final waste disposal sites were developed, it would go a long way to reduce filth in the communities. He urged Ghanaians to ensure environmental cleanliness because total sanitation could be achieved through collective efforts, adding that "we must assume responsibility for the health and cleanliness of our own environment." The Deputy Chief of Party of the NGO, Mrs Lois Ohene-Ayisi, said the aims and objectives of the Organization are to improve the quality of life in communities in the Western, Eastern, Central, Volta and Greater Accra regions. Mrs Ohene-Ayisi said in the Central Region: Assin North and South, Gomoa East and West, Agona East, Awutu-Senya and Effutu Municipality were districts benefiting from the Project at the cost of 13 million US dollars. She said the project would help improve access to safe, clean and adequate water supply and ensure basic sanitation facilities and infrastructure for households, clinics and schools. These would promote complementary hygienic practices resulting in immense health benefits. Mr Felix Amofa, Sanitation Coordinator of the NGO, took participants through topics including, successful implementation of the project, the role of the District and Municipal teams in the implementation of the project, ownership of the project and others. He said the project seeks to provide bore holes, modern toilet facilities, training and small grants for the people to adopt complementary hygiene that would reduce water-borne diseases.
