The Electoral Commission has clarified that based on the decision of the Supreme Court today the Constitutional Instrument (CI) 126 will be implemented during the upcoming registration exercise.
The Commission’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Sylvia Annoh in a statement indicated that a person who want to be registered must provide one of three requirements of identification to proof that he or she is a Ghanaian.
Thus, the existing voters ID card will not be part of the proof of identification during the new voters’ compilation.
“A person who applies for registration as a Voter shall provide as evidence of identification one of the following:
- A passport
- A National Identification card issued by the National Identification Authority or
- One voter registration identification guarantee form as set out in Form One of the schedule that has been completed and signed two registered voters”
On Thursday, June 25, the apex court in a unanimous decision ruled that the Electoral Commission has the power to compile a new register.
Private citizen Mark Takyi-Banson and the opposition NDC filed the case in court asking that it stops the EC from compiling the register or allow the use of the birth certificate and voters ID card by prospective voters as proof of identification.
But, the Court ruled that the current C.I which prevent the admission of birth certificate and voters ID card to be used.
Encouraging people to partake in the upcoming registration exercise which will commence on Tuesday, June 30, Mrs Annoh gave the assurance that the Commission will enforce strict measure protect applicants from contracting Covid-19.
