Nana Apeaning Kwafoamoa II, Krontihene of Akyem Awisa in the Brim South District of the Eastern Region has commissioned a 22 million cedi borehole with a thousand-gallon water tank for the town.
The project was started three months ago by the Awisa-Apaaso Citizens Association (AACA) at Tema to help reduce water-borne diseases in the area.
The Association is financing the drilling of four other boreholes in the town and Apaaso to provide uninterrupted potable water the twin communities of 5,000 people.
Mrs. Paulina Agyei Maafo, Treasurer of the Association and Mr. Kennedy Kwasi Nyarko, Assembly Member for the area, assisted the Krontihene to cut a tap at the ceremony.
Nana Kwafoamoa commended the Association for the initiative and pledged the community's commitment to support projects with communal labour.
He called on non-resident citizens of the twin towns to emulate the Association by supporting the provision social amenities and pledged a 1,000-gallon poly-tank as his contribution towards the project.
The Reverend Issac Benzes Okoree, Secretary of AACA, stressed the Association's commitment towards the development of the area to help improve the living conditions of the people.
Rev. Okoree urged the people to be time conscious to enable them to attain their development aspirations and to put the community first in their dealings and stated "We have traveled all the way from Tema only to meet few members of the community who are expected to receive the project".
He stressed the need for a maintenance culture to ensure a longer life span for the borehole and other facilities provided for the community.
"You should ensure collect token rates for the maintenance of the facility and to fund other projects for the collective benefit of the people".
Rev Okoree said the Association had contributed towards an Education Endowment Fund for the twin towns and provided television sets for the Methodist, Presbyterian and Salvation Army Junior Secondary Schools.
"We intend to offer scholarships to brilliant but needy students," he stated and said plans were far advance to construct a clinic with a residential block for staff to enhance health delivery and a community centre for entertainment and other social activities.
The Secretary called for love and unity among Ghanaians, especially during the nation's Golden Jubilee.
A reshuffled executive committee of AACA with Mr. Seth Andrews Kwakye, Chairman, Mr. Oduro Minta, Vice Chairman and Mr. Stephen Kwaku Duku, Assistant Secretary, was introduced after the ceremony.
Other members of the executive are Mr. Asare Boakye-Yiadom, Financial Secretary and Mr. Alex Kofi Korang, Organising Secretary.
