New WBA International Lightweight Champion Emmanuel Tagoe (20-1-0) says he will immediately focus on clinching a major world title after a hard-fought win against his long-time rival George ‘Red Tiger’ Ashie (23-3-1) in Ghana.Tagoe hopes for a major leap in the world rankings to earn him a major world title shot soon. “I thank God first of all and also thank the Baby Jet Asamoah Gyan for giving me the opportunity to prove to Ghanaians that I am the be best. I am encouraging the Baby Jet to bring in the major world title and I will show the rest of the world that I am in for business”, he said at a post-bout conference. The bout which headlined the maiden promotion for Baby Jet Promotions, owned by Ghana’s Black Stars Captain Asamoah Gyan drew about 7000 fans to the Accra Stadium, saw Tagoe recover from an initial attack from the hard-hitting Ashie. Tagoe danced around the ring virtually running from an aggressive Ashie who stunned the latter with some head and body shots.Tagoe who trains under the legendary Azumah Nelson warmed himself into the bout after the fourth round where he adopted body swerving and swift three-punch combinations anytime Ashie pinned him to the ropes.Ashie, a product of the Attoh Quarshie Gym in Accra moved confidently throughout the bout with a dropped guard which allowed Tagoe to score some points with some head shots.
The score cards of Judges Tony Legson, Adon Bertin and Confidence Hiagbe read 114-114, 115-113 and 116-112 to hand Tagoe a majority decision.Tagoe, who previously held the WBO Africa title, has now improved his fight record to 20 wins and a loss. He currently holds the IBF-intercontinental super featherweight title which he won last year after defeating Chilean Oscar Bravo in Ghana. “No boxer in Ghana has won the kinds of titles I have won and this should send strong signals that someone is about to take the world by storm,” the braggart said.In the other three supporting bouts on the Baby Jet bill, Raymond Commey caused a stir when he staged a last minute recovery to win the West African and national Super Bantamweight title after Emmanuel Quartey in 2 minutes 58 seconds the in tenth round.Abraham Osei Bonsu won a featherweight contest with a unanimous decision over Michael Pappoe. Isaac Owusu defeated Kamarudeen Boyefio in a technical knockout in round four to win a super bantamweight contest.
