Madam Gladys Adobea, Headmistress of Mmeredane Municipal Assembly Kindergarten and Primary School in Sunyani on Tuesday appealed to parents and guardians to provide quality education for their maid-servants. She said parents and guardians must complement the efforts of teachers by relieving the maidservants of numerous household chores so they could be punctual to school. Madam Adobea was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Sunyani. "No matter what they are, they are human beings and must be educated. Most of them are aged 18 and 19 years and are in primary one but are not released on time to attend school. "This practice cannot match the objectives of the new educational reforms since they (maidservants) cannot be overworked and denied the right to education. 'This can adversely affect their academic performance", the headmistress stressed. Touching on problems confronting her school, Madam Adobea complained that the institution lacked places of convenience and water supply which has been compounded by the failure of parents and guardians to attend Parents-Teacher Association meetings. She suggested the re-introduction of life skills and arts and craft education from the primary level to the Junior High School or JSS level in order to equip students who could not afford higher education to have trade skills. Madam Adobea said the Capitation Grant was not sufficient enough to take care of the school's needs and appealed to individuals and organizations to assist it to complete a two-unit kindergarten block under construction. She said several attempts made at the municipal directorate of education for assistance had not received any positive response. Source: GNA
