Educationist, Professor Stephen Adai says the extension of the number of hours by the Ghana Education Service at the Basic level alone, will not improve basic examination results. Professor Adai tells Adom News that the Ghana Education Service (GES) should not make an excuse with the number of hours, as the reason for the low BECE results. The Former Rector of Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) explains that GES should rather focus on strict supervisory role, to check the performance of teachers and students. According to him, the GES should also look at motivating the teachers by increasing their allowances and incentives, to boost their morale. Meanwhile the Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Mr. Stephen Adu maintains that the objective to extend the regular working hours for teachers in the Basic level, is to help the children to improve and come out with better results from the BECE. He stated that final year students at the JHS level will have a different time table and about ten (10) hours of lectures before they sit for their final exams. The National President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, Samuel Doe Alovuia welcomed plans by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to extend the regular teaching hours to improve the poor performance of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results in the country. Mr. Doe Alovuia says as a result of mass failure of the BECE, teachers have started two hours extra tuition on Saturdays to improve teaching and learning especially in the affected areas. He says teachers are ready to collaborate with the other stakeholders in the Education sector to find lasting solution to regular poor performance in the basic level. He said due to poor performance of the BECE in the three Northern regions, the teachers started the extra tuition when they vacated for the Christmas festivities.
