The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has begun negotiations with the Premier League’s title sponsor, Glo, for a possible renewal of the sponsorship contract. The five-year sponsorship deal with the mobile phone service provider ended with Asante Kotoko’s triumph on the last day of the 2012/13 season.GFA president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, told Graphic Sports that his outfit was in negotiations with Glo for a new deal ahead of the start of the next league season on September 15.“We are currently negotiating, but there is nothing concrete at the moment,” he said.Just last week, reports suggested the end-of-season Glo League Awards for the 2012/13 season had been called off because of lack of funds to finance the programme.Glo signed a five-year sponsorship package with the GFA in 2008, a deal worth $3 million per season. But the relationship was characterised by delays in releasing funds to honour the deal.At the moment, Glo owes the league at least $2.1 million representing last season’s package less the 30 per cent discount granted to the company by the league. Before the start of the last season, Glo released $7.9 million to the clubs within the span of a month to cover the company’s indebtedness to the league at the time.
