A yet to be identified female student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is reported dead while a second is injured after a concrete slab fell on them on campus Saturday afternoon.
The two were said to have been trapped by the heavy slab that fell off a concrete canopy over the walkway leading to the Independence Hall (Indece) of residence just about 3pm.
The dead student is reported to have fallen into coma immediately after suffering the hit and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the University Hospital where they were rushed for medical attention. The second who sustained injuries is however responding to treatment, according to Nhyira FM sources.
The slabs, built over galvanized iron pipes, are reported to have seen very little renovation since they were constructed some 53 years ago.
An architect and former student of the KNUST, Daniel Kwame Boateng who says he is familiar with the level of decay of some of the structures, is urging the school authorities to “take the bull by the horn” and undertake major renovation works on campus to avert such needless fatalities, lamenting that Saturday’s misfortune was practically avoidable.
