There are heightened fears of an outbreak of cholera in the Central Gonja district of the Northern region. This is because the few public places of convenience in the area have been submerged in floodwaters.About 2,500 persons have been displaced in some 63 communities following heavy rains since Saturday. Residents are said to be not only defecating indiscriminately but also drinking from contaminated water sources. The DCE for the area, Issifu Salisu, is deeply worried especially because help has yet to come to his people. But Northern Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation, Alhaji Adbulai Silimboma who is presently in Accra has assured relief items are being dispatched to the district.Source: Joy News/Ghana
