The Governing Council of the Tamale Polytechnic has sacked five lecturers for sexual misconduct. A letter signed by the Principal, Dr Yakubu Seidu Teligar, says a committee set up by the Polytechnic Council some three months ago, found the sacked teachers guilty. Meanwhile the Tamale branch of the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana has rejected the decision of the Council and has called on its members to treat the action with contempt. The affected teachers are Issahaku Adams of the Department of Secretaryship and Management, Abdul Aziz Munkaila and Suraj Wumbe both of the Department of Accountancy, Adam Bawa, Department of Language and liberal Studies and Abdul Momen. Three other lecturers have been served warning notices in connection with the scandal. According to Joy News Northern Regional Correspondent, Mahama Shaibu, the Governing Council of the Tamale Polytechnic set up the probe after female students complained of being sexually harassed by a section of the lecturers for academic favours. But the Tamale branch of the POTAG, led by its Chairman, Mohammed Aliu, in rejecting the Council’s decision after a crisis meeting, said the investigating committee was not properly constituted in line with the Polytechnic’s statues. According to Mohammed Aliu, the termination of the affected teachers’ appointment, which takes effect from October 31st, was both shocking and disgraceful, apart from falling short of clearly spelt-out provisions.
