Former president Jerry John Rawlings will on Wednesday lead members of the June 4 uprising to mark the 35th anniversary of the coup that toppled the Supreme Military Council.
The Supreme Military Council (SMC) was the ruling government of Ghana from 1975 to 1979.
Then Chairman of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), Flt. Lft. Jerry John Rawlings started a 'house cleaning' exercise against corruption in 1979.
Three former military leaders of Ghana, Lt. Gen Akwasi Amankwa Afrifa, General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong and Lieutenant General Fred W. K. Akuffo were all executed together with five other senior officers deemed to have been corrupt by the special courts set up by the government.
According to a release by the anniversary planning committee and signed by Naval Capt Afeku Amenyo a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of the fallen heroes will be held at the Revolution Square Accra and will be replicated across the various regions.
It will be preceded by a route march from Kawukudi Junction to the Revolution Square.
According to the release by the anniversary planning committee, the occasion will be graced by the presence of Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings who was leader of the uprising and the December 1981 Revolution.
Cadres in regions across the country are expected to organise regional commemorative events.
Cadres, June 4 sympathisers, members of the public and the media have been invited to participate in the ceremony.
