GBC to collect TV licence despite court case

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation says it will go ahead with the collection of the new TV licence fees tomorrow despite a writ filed by Dr. Charles Wereko Brobby against it..

Dr. Wereko Brobby is, among others things, seeking to restrain the state broadcaster from collecting the fees starting August 1.

His lawyer Egbert Faibille Jnr. tells Joy News the writ, served on GBC means the corporation cannot go ahead with the collection until the matter is determined by the High Court.

He explained that the perpetual injunction restraining GBC from collecting the licence from tomorrow being sought by his client will operate to restrain the state broadcaster from collecting the fees until the mode of sharing the proceeds is changed.

He warned GBC to be mindful of the fact that disregarding the case pending in court could be contemptuous.

However, Director-General of GBC, Major (rtd) Albert Don Chebe told Joy News the state broadcaster will go ahead and collect the fees tomorrow.

He said they have been served with the writ and would respond to it within eight days, but was emphatic “the writ doesn’t stop us from” collecting the annual GHc36 TV licence.
