The Administrator of Stool Lands, Christie Bobobee is advocating a radical approach to tackling the rising incidence of child sexual abuse.

She says the rate at which children are being molested sexually calls for intensified sex education alongside stiffer punishment for perpetrators.

Her call follows recent report by the Police Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit indicating a sharp increase in sexual abuse cases last year.

The report revealed an increase in defilement cases with the Greater Accra region topping the list.

Mrs. Bobobee spoke at the launch of the Tamar project at Fumesua, near Ejisu under the theme; “Sexual abuse, prevent it; report it”.

It is an initiative by the Global Evangelical Church to fight child prostitution and pornography in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality of the Ashanti region.

“We should really have radical approach to the problem because if you look at the statistics and the effects of sexual violence, we should not take it as usual business”, worried Mrs. Bobobee said.

According to her, sexual violence against children has reached an unacceptable level which calls for national debate and attention.

“Little children less than six years are being abused. What future do those children have? Sexual education should be mainstreamed into the curriculum. Children will learn about their sexuality,” She said.

The Global Evangelical Church is partnering a non-governmental organization, Juniper Tree Counseling Center, to execute the project.

Police at Ejisu prosecuted thirteen parents whose children publicly patronized pornographic materials last May.

Mrs. Bobobee wants the Ghana Education Service to introduce martial arts lessons to equip children especially girls with preventive skills against sexual abuse.

Executive Director for Juniper Tree Counseling Center, Dr. Joseline Fugar says the center and its partners are working over the next ten years to eliminate the canker of sexual abuse as they train teachers to respond to effectively to abused children.

“Juniper Tree, a Christian non-governmental organization is therefore launching a ten-year nationwide campaign dubbed the “Tamar Project” in collaboration with other stakeholders: the Kumasi Presbytery of the Global Evangelical Church, Ministry of Education and Social Welfare Department to drastically reduce the incidence of sexual abuse in the next ten years through education”.
