Nuumo Akpeng IV Asafoatse, Kpone Appiah We, on Tuesday called on the Ghana Education Service and the National Service Secretariat to deploy more Ga trained teachers into schools in the municipality.
In an interview, the Asafoatse expressed concern that most often Ga indigenes after completion of the various teacher education training institutions were posted to non-Ga speaking communities.
Nuumo Akpeng IV said the posting process had contributed to a gradual decrease in the teaching of the Ga language in the various schools within the Greater Accra Region.
“Our children are losing interest in learning our language because they will not be posted to teach in the region,”
Asafoatse Akpeng IV called on the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service and stakeholders to join forces with Traditional Authorities within the Region to help protect the Ga language.
“Charity they say begins from Home, so I call on Ga parents to restore the dignity of our language in the various communities; we must speak pure Ga and our traditional languages, foreign languages cannot be the foundational communication medium for our children,” He added.
He said the Kpone Traditional Council would reward people who would help teach the Ga language in various schools.
Currently, the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality has a deficit of Ga Language Teachers, compelling some schools to replace it with other languages.
