Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has given permission to two of his players Mahatma Otoo and Rashid Sumaila to skip the start of their World Cup qualifying training to play for their local clubs in league matches on Wednesday.
The duo, who play for Hearts of Oak and Kotoko respectively, were part of the 25-man squad named by the coach for camping which started on Monday.
But both players did not turn up for training which raised some concerns among the media gathered to watch.
This was even more surprising as the three-home goalkeepers in the team Fatau Dauda, Daniel Adjei and Stephen Adams all turned for training.
But with Otoo chasing the goalking title while Sumaila is key to Kotoko’s ambitions of retaining the league title both players opted to stay with their clubs and play in Wednesday’s matches.
Coach Appiah says he is aware that the clubs have the right to retain their players insisting it won’t affect his training plans.
“I am aware that some players in the local will not turn up as they have league matches on Wednesday. This won’t affect our plans,” Appiah said.
The Black Stars will continue training on Tuesday morning at the Accra Sports Stadium and the numbers are expected to improve.
Otoo and Sumaila will join the squad in time for them to travel to Ethiopia
