The Embassy of Ghana in Switzerland has commemorated Ghana’s 69th Independence Anniversary with a community engagement event that brought together members of the Ghanaian diaspora across Switzerland.
The gathering served as a moment of reflection on Ghana’s journey since independence while reinforcing the role of Ghanaians abroad in supporting national development.
Addressing the community, Ghana’s Ambassador to Switzerland, Professor Esi Awuah, emphasized the importance of unity among Ghanaians living abroad and encouraged the diaspora to remain actively connected to Ghana’s national aspirations.
She noted that the progress of the country is closely linked to the collective contributions of its citizens both at home and abroad.
According to Ambassador Awuah, the Ghanaian diaspora remains a strategic partner in the country’s development agenda.
She highlighted the significant impact of diaspora remittances, knowledge exchange, entrepreneurship, and international networks in advancing Ghana’s socio-economic growth.
“The Ghanaian community abroad plays a critical role in shaping the future of our nation. Beyond remittances, your expertise, innovation, and engagement in global spaces help position Ghana as a competitive and forward-looking country,” she said.
The event also provided a platform for members of the Ghanaian community to interact with embassy officials and discuss issues affecting Ghanaians living in Switzerland.
Participants shared ideas on how to strengthen collaboration between the diaspora and institutions in Ghana, particularly in areas such as investment, education, technology transfer, and cultural diplomacy.
The celebration formed part of activities marking Ghana’s independence milestone, first achieved on March 6, 1957. Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule, setting the stage for other African nations to pursue self-determination.
Participants at the event also reflected on the enduring legacy of Ghana’s independence and the responsibility of citizens to contribute to the country’s continued progress. Cultural expressions, networking sessions, and discussions on Ghana’s future prospects further enriched the occasion.
Themed Building Prosperity and Restoring Hope, The Ghana Embassy reiterated its commitment to strengthening engagement with the Ghanaian diaspora in Switzerland and fostering initiatives that promote national development, cultural exchange, and stronger people-to-people relations between Ghana and Switzerland.
As Ghana marks 69 years of independence, the message from the embassy was clear: unity among Ghanaians and the active participation of the diaspora remain essential pillars in building a prosperous and resilient nation.
