The Minority in Parliament has described President Akufo-Addo's 2021 State of the Nation Address (SONA) is misleading,
The NDC MPs say it is fraught with factual inaccuracies which do not reflect the true affairs of the country.
Speaking in Parliament Wednesday, the MPs said government has performed abysmally over the past four years.
They accused the President of ballooning the country's national debt, arguing that the current administration has borrowed ¢165 billion within four years, bringing the country's debt to a total of ¢286.9 billion
This, according to the NDC MPs, means every Ghanaian owes ¢9,500.
“What this means is that within the last four years have increased the individual debts. Mr Speaker as if that is not enough for the first time the NPP have collateralised and monetized future revenues of our nation,” MP for Asunafo South Eric Opoku said.
He said the true state of the nation is that Ghana is in the state of “comatose” adding that the President’s address needs to be properly scrutinised whether indeed he and his team are good managers of the economy.
But the NPP Caucus disagreed.
They argued that the Address delivered by the President on Tuesday is topnotch and reflects what pertains on the ground.
The NPP MPs observed that in spite of the pandemic, President Akufo-Addo demonstrated leadership by easing the burden it had on businesses and lives.
Manhyia NPP MP, Matthew Opoku Prempeh said, “Mr Speaker it was exciting to hear from the President about the Obaatanpa Ghana CARES program.
"This program is to bring $100 million into the economy to retransform it from Covid-19 times to post-Covid-19 times.”
He said among other things the State of the Nation Address put in perspective how government’s flagship programs like Free SHS, 1District 1 Factory and others have helped transform the country and the various sectors of the economy.
“Mr Speaker, it is true that Covid hit us badly but the leadership exercised by the President ensured that Ghana became a pacesetter even in Covid times. We should clap for the President,” he said.
