The Minister of Water Resource, Works and Housing, Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, has called for the establishment of more medical institutions to train doctors to cater for the health needs of the people.
Citing Cuba as example, he noted how the Cuban government through its Medical Brigade had trained a lot of doctors who were serving in various countries especially in Africa. He added: "The number of doctors to Ghana from Cuba has moved from 100 to 200 and this has significantly helped our hospitals and health centres".
Mr. Owusu-Agyeman said this when the Cuban Ambassador, Mr Miguel Perez Cruz paid a courtesy call on him to announce his assumption of duty officially.
He said Cuba, as a self-sufficient country had over the years supported Ghana in the economic emancipation drive in areas such as ICT and water resource management, among others, adding that government would continue to cooperate with Cuba in all sectors to achieve total development.
He said: ”We are fortunate to be spared by hurricanes and other major disasters and this should rather help us to progress and achieve sustainable economic development."
Mr Owusu-Agyeman assured the Ambassador of government's commitment to renovate the UNESCO flats and the Ambassadors' residence to provide them the needed comfort to carry out their task.
Mr Miguel Perez Cruz said the Cuban government, together with the Ministry of Health was working towards the establishment of a factory to produce insecticide to curtail the spread of malaria in country.
He called for further collaboration between the two countries to tackle international issues since both were leaders of internationally recognized organizations.
