Ghana allowed a two-goal lead to slip away as DR Congo rallied back to draw 2-2 in a lively Group B match at the Africa Cup of Nations. The result at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Sunday leaves both teams with a point apiece after their opening match. Goals from Emmanuel Agyemang Badu and Kwadwo Asamoah were cancelled out by the DR Congo’s Bezua Mbokani and Tresor Mputu. Ghana will now be looking for a win against Mali, who they play on Thursday. DR Congo goalkeeper Robert Kidiaba had little to do and his blushes were spared in the 30th minute when Asamoah Gyan, who had been played through goal saw his shot shockingly miss its target. As the game swung from one end to the other, it was Ghana who drew first blood, and that happened to be the first goal at the Nations Cup, scored by Emmanuel Agyemang Badu. A great pass and go move between Gyan and Kwadwo Asamoah saw the latter lay the ball into the path of the sliding Badu to tap in the opener in the 39th minute. The goal made up for the forgettable first day matches after hosts South Africa and debutants Cape Verde settled for a 0-0 result in the opener at Soccer City and Morocco and Angola also played a scoreless game. Back from recess, Ghana started the second half just like it ended the first; four minutes in, Asamoah headed in the second goal off a corner kick. Three minutes later, the Congolese pulled one back through a Tresor Mputu. Ghana responded but Rabiu Mohammed, who had come on for Christian Atsu, could not finish off a good cross from Gyan. In the 69th minute, the Leopards were back on level pegging when Bezua Mbokani was fouled in the Ghana box by Jerry Akaminko. The striker elected himself for the kick and sent the ball into the roof of the net to make 2-2. Gyan attempted to put Ghana back in the lead but Kidiaba was on hand to parry his shot to corner. Ghana goalkeeper Dauda did well in the final ten minutes, tipping a low drive round the post. And despite ending in a draw, it is a result that Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah will not be happy with as his side let go a great lead.
