Ghana earned a little more from its timber exports last year.According to figures from the Forestry Commission, the country grossed some 294 million Ghana cedis compared to 270 million Ghana cedis in 2009.Last year’s revenue represents the export of about 403 thousand cubic meters of timber compared to about 426,000 cubic meters.Even though a whole lot more was exported, timber exports have consistently declined over the period largely due to decreased export volumes in all trading products except air dried lumber, curls veneer and plywood.Forestry Commission Chief Executive Samuel Afari blames the decline in revenue on the global economic crises.“It’s not the best because I’m sure you are aware of the economic crunch or the economic meltdown. And one of the industries hardest hit obviously is the wood industry because when construction is very low obviously wood consumption will be very, very low, especially in terms of export. He is however hopeful this year’s output will be better.
“This is better than the 2009 figures but we are in the process of recovering.”Source: Joy News/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
