A section of the public is questioning a law restricting the use of the national flag.
The law, according to Lawyer Ace Ankomah, makes it an offence for anyone to use the flag without the express permission of the Minister of Interior.
He explained to Joy News flying the flag on any other day apart from national holidays or specific festive occasions could attract a fine or sentence.
“Basically you cannot use the flag or its design or the Coat of Arms or part of it or a part of either of them for any purpose except with a license given by the Minister for Interior for a special time or purpose and on its condition.”
Mr. Ankomah was explaining the basis of a government directive to the Black Stars’ headline sponsor, Goldfields Ghana, to stop the use of the national flag in a special sports paraphernalia produced for supporters of the national team.
The company has since apologized and promised to withdraw the paraphernalia.
But apparently they are not the only guilty ones. Some members of the public Joy News spoke to want the law re-examined when it comes to public use for expression of loyalty.
They say The Flag and Arms Protection Act, 1959, should be scrapped.
Calling the law a bad one, the citizens say they feel a sense of national pride to hoist the flag.
