The country will have a name for its oil before the resource begins to flow in commercial quantities in December.
According to officials of the Energy Ministry, the committee set up to settle on the name is hoping to conclude its work by the end of October. They however add that the name will not become official until the government has approved it.
Joy Business’ George Wiafe reported that the Energy Ministry earlier this year set up the committee to receive proposals from the public on a suitable name unique to Ghana and in line with international practice.
The oil from the Jubilee field is light sweet crude, one of the most sought after on the world market because it costs much less to refine, unlike the heavier crude.
The Public Relations Officer at the Energy Ministry, Edward Bawa explaining to Joy Business what the committee will be looking out for said, “the name must depict our aspirations, the name must also have a connection with our heritage, the name must be Ghanaian. That is something that we can’t compromise on.”
He assured the committee will come out with a name that will be acceptable to all Ghanaians.
He mentioned Gola (Ghana Oil Liberation of Africa), Black Star Light Crude Oil, Kente Blend, Sakaman Light Paradise, Super Oil of Ghana as some of the names that have been proposed so far.
The crude oil from Nigeria is known as Boney Light whilst Venezuela’s is known as Tijuana Light. Others are Arab Light from Saudi Arabia, Minas from Indonesia, Saharan Blend from Algeria and Fateh from Dubai.
