A nine year old pupil of the Wa Bishop Primary School at Mangu in the Wa municipality of the Upper West Region has drowned in a dugout used to water food crops.
Nadia Ahmed, a class one pupil had gone to pluck mangoes with her friends when the sad incident occurred.
Her body has since been retrieved and buried.
An eye witness, Yaw Sidiki who has his garden around the area said he heard shouts and cries from the girls minutes after he saw the girls playing under the mango tree.
He quickly went to the scene of the incident but could not rescue the little girl. He said he then went to the school to inform the teachers about the incident.
Joy News' Rafiq Salam reported that the teachers had to rely on a local driver who dived into the dugout and brought out the young girl but it was too late.
Nadia was buried same day according to strict Islamic tradition.
