Globeserve Ministries International, a Christian Non-Governmental Organization, has drilled 62 boreholes to provide potable water to 50,000 people in the Volta, Eastern and Greater Accra Regions.
Reverend Samuel A.K. Dunya, Founder and General Overseer of the Ministry said this at a get-together, organized by the Church, for some government officials and a team from the Lutheran Church of Hope, USA, sponsors of the project.
Reverend Dunya said the Church plans to drill another 60 boreholes in the year 2011 and 2012 to provide water for more communities, to enhance the country's aim of meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) related to health.
He said the initiative was in line with the Church's objective to give "holistic touch to people's life and not only the spiritual".
Rev. Dunya said within the past five years, the Church embarked on eight medical outreaches each year in the three regions, where 6,000, insecticide treated mosquito nets were distributed freely in the communities.
He said some people were also trained in the communities to identify malaria cases and guide the affected ones through treatment.
Rev. Dunya said with the support of the Lutheran Church of Hope, Globeserve had acquired 142 acres of land for farming purposes, to sustain its projects and called for assistance from government to cultivate the land.
Mr Michael Kobla Adjaho, Adaklu-Anyigbe District Chief Executive, commended Globeserve for the initiative and said the provision of good drinking water was of great concern to government.
He said it was pathetic to see rural dwellers walk several miles in search of water and said the 20 boreholes drilled in the District by Globeserve had improved sanitation and quality of life of the people in the District.
Madam Juliana Azumah-Mensah, Minister for Women and Children's Affairs and Member of Parliament for Ho-East hoped the boreholes would save women and girls the trouble of walking long distances in search of water for their families.
Mr Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister thanked Globeserve and the Lutheran Church of Hope for supporting people in the region and pledged the readiness of the Regional Coordinating Council to support such initiatives.
Pastor Pat Quaid, Leader of the team from the Lutheran Church of Hope said the gifts and supports were "free gifts of grace with no string attached," and hoped they would put smiles on the faces of people.
