The Minority in Parliament has opposed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government's decision to fund the establishment of the GOLDBOD initiative.
Speaking to the media after Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson delivered the 2025 budget in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, the Minority expressed dissatisfaction with some aspects of the fiscal policy, including the GOLDBOD allocations.
"We (NPP government) have never funded the gold purchase programme or the gold-for-oil scheme from the budget; it has never happened. So, to fund the GOLDBOD from the budget, in our view, is simply putting money in the hands of NDC cronies. It is about creating, looting, and sharing," said Dr Anim Adams.
In the 2025 budget, the Finance Minister disclosed that a total of $279 million has been allocated as a "revolving fund for the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD) to purchase and export at least 3 tonnes of gold per week from small-scale miners."
However, the Minority insists, "We believe this is about creating, looting, and sharing, and we will resist it."
The establishment of the Gold Board by the NDC government has seen some criticism especially from the main opposition party.
Meanwhile, the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) has expressed its satisfaction with the idea.
