As part of government's effort to create sustainable employment for the youth, about 3,635 have graduated as beneficiaries under the Trade and Vocation module of the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA). At the ceremony, 2,486 dressmakers and 1,143 hairdressers trained in the Greater Accra region were provided equipment and other basic tools to set up. The programme, which is under the auspices of GYEEDA in collaboration with Asongtaba Cottage and Exchange Programme is designed to encourage self-employment and to make young people economically viable and independent. In a speech read on his behalf of the Executive Director of GYEEDA, Abuga Pele underscored the need for the youth to be empowered to ensure they contribute significantly to the economic development of the country. He noted that the greatest legacy any nation can leave its future leaders is to give them a better opportunity to play their rightful roles in the society. “Today will certainly go down in the annals of this country that government’s policy has given the opportunity for the youth of this country to contribute to the socio-economic development of our country” he added. Abuga Pele revealed that the World Bank has agreed to finance the Programme Youth Enterprise Project aimed at bringing together youth groups and individuals who have brilliant business ideas and proposals to be supported and mentored to start and grow their businesses into sustainable ventures. He expressed appreciation to all the stakeholders who have supported government’s efforts to eradicate youth employment in the country. Mr. Pele urged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the initiatives available to them and make their life more fulfilled. On his part, the Executive Director of Asongtaga Cottage Industry and Exchange Programme (ACI&EP) facilitators of the programme said they have lived up to expectation. According to Henry Kangah, considering the quality of training given to the beneficiaries, they will excel in their chosen profession. He explained that each beneficiary will receive a setup kit as part of the business process in addition to making available a modernized workstation under a special micro financing scheme for interested graduands. He urged the graduands to be hardworking, creative and disciplined and to dream big to succeed. Henry Kangah promised his outfit will give out the best to tap the rich potential resources in the youth through technical and vocational training. Other dignitaries who graced the occasion were the Osu Mantse, Nii Kinka Okwei Dowuona VI, Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Isaac Vanderpuye and coordinators of the GYEEDA project in the Greater Accra region.
