The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has ordered the closure of all beaches within the region with immediate effect.
The decision was taken on December 24, after a meeting to discuss the emergence of the Omicron variant and the consequent increase in positive cases recorded in the region.
Aside the closure of beaches, REGSEC has directed that effective, Saturday, December 25, all passengers without face masks must not be allowed to board any public means of transport.
In a press statement sighted by JoyNews, the Council stated that "all persons moving in public places must ensure that they wear their face masks and observe all the Covid-19 safety protocols in public places."
This is part of measures to avert another wave of the pandemic after the celebration of Christmas and New Year festivities.
Meanwhile, the REGSEC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has directed that, "all construction works in Ramsar Sites, Wetlands, and Mangroves must seize with immediate effect while the Council awaits findings and recommendations by the committee set by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources for further action."
"Individuals found breaching the directive will be made to face the law," the document indicated.
In another development, as part of efforts to ensure strict compliance with the road traffic regulations, the Council has directed that "motorbikes are not allowed to carry more than two persons.
Also, "all motor riders must wear helmets, observe all traffic regulations and not cross red lights."
Owners of motorbikes in Police custody have also been tasked to "provide documentation and reasons for release to them. Otherwise, the Police shall seek a court order to confiscate such motor bikes effective December 31."
