The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) says it is wrong to blame only the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) solely for the worsening power situation in the country as has been the case among the public.

PURC's comment is in reaction to a Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) Afro Barometer report released Thursday November 13, 2014 that revealed Ghanaians are dissatisfied with the lack consistent electricity supply by the ECG and government.

According to the CDD report, 75 percent of 2,400 Ghanaians surveyed in 291 towns and 177 districts believe more should be done to improve the power situation in the country.

Director of Public Affairs at the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC), Nana Yaa Gyantuah, says lack of consistent provision of power by the ECG must also be laid at the doorstep of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).

"If ECG is being indicted alone without the other utilities...that will be a bit unfair because [electricity supply] is a chain [that involves] the generation company (VRA), the transmission company (GRIDCo) and the distribution company (ECG)" said Nana Yaa Gyantuah.

According to Mrs Gyantuah, management of the load shedding exercise that started for a second time this year some three months ago is where the problems lies.

She said the inability for the ECG to stick the load shedding schedule is what frustrates power consumers.

"There is also the problem of faults in the system at the same time as the load shedding is going on and also the use of the Automatic Frequency Load shedding (AFLS) mechanism that automatically takes off the power when there is going to be a systems collapse or decay", she explained.
