The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) is demanding an inclusion in government’s vehicle importation waiver.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the GRNMA’s 16th quadrennial National Delegates Congress in Accra, the President of the Association, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, underscored the need for all healthcare givers to be given equal benefits and treatment.
“If the waiver is being instituted after the NDC cut it off then we would have love to see that it cuts across all health professionals, especially our nurses and midwives,” she requested.
This request comes after Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta stated in Parliament during the presentation of the 2024 Budget that the government recognizes the challenges medical personnel face in providing health care in the country.
For this reason, he assured that government will engage the GMA on waivers for the importation of vehicles to ease the transportation burden of doctors.
His assurance comes after the GMA issued new demands to the government on November 13 regarding their working conditions ahead of the budget reading.
But Madam Ofori-Ampofo said the GRNMA was the first association to draw government’s attention that the vehicle importation waiver could help curb the exodus of health professionals.
However, it came as a surprise that the government has assured to engage the Ghana Medical Association since both associations have been working hard towards it.
She also mentioned the need for nurses to be given better conditions of service as she blames the increasing number of nurses leaving the country on lack of tools to work with, poor remuneration and other working conditions.
