The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has reacted to a video circulating on social media in which a group of visiting Black Americans claim they were kidnapped and extorted by people they believed to be police officers.
In a statement released on Monday, December 8, and signed by Bright Asempa Tsadidey, Director of Corporate Affairs, on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, the Authority said the relevant national security institutions have already taken up the matter.
According to the GTA, “the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority have already launched full investigations into the matter.” The statement added that both agencies are treating the incident with urgency, assuring the public that updates will be provided when the investigations conclude.
The GTA stressed that despite the concerns raised in the viral video, Ghana remains a safe destination, especially as thousands of visitors arrive for this year’s December in GH events.
“GTA assures all travellers and the public that the country remains a safe and trusted destination. Our security systems, supported by national law enforcement and tourism sector partners, have been reinforced to guarantee the safety, comfort, and peace of mind of all visitors throughout the festive season.”
The public has been urged to stay calm and allow the security agencies to complete their investigations.
Visitors in need of assistance or information can reach the Ghana Tourism Authority through the following channels: 0579579019, 030 700 7100, or WhatsApp: 0546352240.
Reaffirming the country’s readiness to welcome tourists, the statement added, “Ghana remains open, secure, and welcoming. Visitors should have full confidence in their safety.”
