Television news staff of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation are wearing red arm bands Monday as they go into a crucial meeting with the Director General to resolve an impasse which started over the weekend.
Joy News sources at GBC say management is considering merging the radio and TV newsrooms, as part of restructuring at the state broadcaster.
But, it appears this has not been properly communicated to staff.
Some TV news staff resisted efforts by the Deputy Director General, Anane Sarpong, to replace the reader of the midday news with a radio news presenter Abigail Larbi.
The decision resulted in fierce verbal exchanges between him and the editor-in-charge, Titi Anepe, who insisted on Barbara Gaizie presenting the midday news.
Mr. Sarpong is reported to have threatened to sack the news editor if she flouted his order.
Today, Joy News sources say the TV newsroom staff refused to produce and broadcast their news highlights at 10am and 11am.
They are currently locked up in a meeting with the Director General to resolve the matter.
Management and the local union have declined to speak to Joy News on the matter but Joy News reporter Kwaku Obeng Adjei, who visited the state broadcaster to monitor developments, said most the workers were at post.
