The Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, has called for the immediate suspension of a decision by authorities at the University of Ghana to convert Commonwealth Hall (Vandals) into a mixed hall. According to him, it would be better if the university engages members of the hall in a dialogue to find lasting solution to problems instead of taking a decision that is inappropriate and unsustainable. The executive committee of the University decided to convert the all male residence into a mixed gender hall following what the authorities say are recent incidents of unruly behaviour by students of the hall, which authorities say brought the name of the university into disrepute. Kicking against the decision, the students disrupted and delayed examinations at the university on Wednesday. They met with Vice President John Mahama, himself an alumnus of the Hall to intervene in the matter. Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme Thursday, Kweku Baako and Dr. Omane Boamah, Deputy Science and Environment Minister, said the authorities' decision to convert the hall is a wrong and dangerous attempt to break the students front since the Vandals have been instrumental in protesting some decisions by the school that do not favour the entire student body. “It does not mean we are undermining the authority of the university,” Mr Baako noted. He was, however, disappointed in the Vandals for disrupting exams on Wednesday. Mr Baako reminded them that it is against the laws of the university and the land for students to disrupt examinations, urging that it is in their interest that they go about their issues with discipline. Mr Boamah also warned the students to bear in mind that public opinion has been on their side on this issue and should therefore refrain from engaging in acts that would strengthen the hands of those who want to clamp down on them.
