Newly elected National Youth Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party Mr. Sammy Awuku has declared the youth wing of the party, will not tolerate smear campaigns during the upcoming flagbeareship contest slated for late this year.
According to Sammy Awuku, the youth wing under his leadership will strive to win power for the NPP and Ghana but will not look on unconcerned for presidential aspirants within the party and their supporters to wound the party during the contest.
The National Youth Organizer made the declaration during a youth rally at Kwahu Bepong in the Eastern Region.
He said they will have the courage to condemn whoever attempts to destroy the party in their bid to struggle for internal power.
Several names have popped up as the opposition party prepares to chose a presidential candidate for 2016. Nana Akuffo Addo, a four-time contender for the position is considered frontrunner. But he will face former ministers, Alan Kyeremanten and Dr. Konadu Apraku who have both tried twice without success.
Others mentioned include former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Joe Ghartey, Mr Francis Addai Nimoh, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mampong and a former MP Stephen Asamoah Boateng will also contest.
It has been projected that the list could keeping growing.
But flagbearership races in the NPP have also become opportunities for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to gather damaging propaganda used by different camps of opposing NPP candidates.
Youth groups endorsed and sponsored by candidates suddenly emerge and often vilify each other.
A pratice which many consider to have hurt the party during general presidential elections in 2008 and 2012.
‘That old strategy of defaming ourselves during flagbeareship contest and hurting the party after the contest will not be tolerated by the youth wing of the NPP. Whether our aspiring flagbeareres like it or not we the youth wing will not allow them to split our party, we shall sanitize their campaign, because they make our work too difficult. Massa, campaign is not easy posting posters is not easy, if we give you posters and starch to paste you will realize that, it’s not easy, Sammy Awuku said
On his part, the Ashanti regional youth organizer of the NPP Justin Kodua declared that the NPP are not ready to go to court after the 2016 election hence the youth will do every to win power.
‘We are telling the NDC that if they do not want free and fair elections and they register 6 years children, we shall also allow 2 years children to register and vote. What we have learn from Atuguba and their judges is that all is that is needed is the counting of the ballot’. Justin Kodua charged.
