The horrifying spectacle of a tortured man's body strapped to an electricity pole on Monday attracted scores of spectators to the Harbour Roundabout, Community One in Tema. With both the hands and feet of the hanging body tied with ropes, strands of hair could be traced from the body to a parking lot at a nearby filling station, where cargo haulage trucks from the Tema Port usually park overnight. Security sources identified the body as that of a popular resident of Tema, identified only as Alhassan, alias "Scaler", believed to have been murdered at the nearby petrol filling station before the body was dragged to and tied at the location where it was found. There were bruises on the face, shoulders and elbows, which police sources said could be signs of torture. Alhassan was said to be a 'hustler' in Tema, a 'connection man,' famous for the precision with which he played the middleman's role for people who had something to buy or sell. He was also said to be a generous man who would often connect the buyer to the seller, no matter the object of trade, take his commission and spend with friends. Eyewitnesses said they believed he was killed while trying to offload sugar from a yellow cargo truck which was seen parked between two other trucks at the filling station. They said the slippers the deceased had been seen wearing previously were found in a dustbin close to the two trucks. When police detectives visited the filling station on Monday morning, the yellow truck was nowhere to be found. It was discovered that one of the two trucks had different registration numbers at the back and front. The truck, a green Renault, had a Burkina Faso vehicle registration number, 11JJ1098, in front and the number 11JJ2079 at the back. The other truck, a blue DAF, bore the Ghanaian registration number AS 9506 X. The road crew of both trucks could not be immediately located. Detective Sergeant Seth Dankwa of the Railways Harbour Police said the police would mount a search for the missing yellow truck loaded with sugar and its road crew.
