Two Members of Parliament who got into an argument in the full glare of the public eye will not face sanctions, Former Majority Leader Alban Bagbin has said.
Ablekuma West MP Ursula Owusu and her colleague, Nantong MP Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed had a verbal spat in public after a misunderstanding.
The two were said to have behaved in a manner considered unparliamentary.
In an interview with Joy News’ Elton John Brobbey, Alban Bagbin said no punitive measures will be taken against the two except that they will be groomed to behave in a more parliamentary way.
He said that spats in Parliament are likely to occur, especially at the beginning of every parliamentary term given the acrimonious nature of elections.
He said that people come to Parliament seeing their opponents as enemies instead of partners in development.
He singled out Ursula Owusu for criticism, accusing her of being a “hot head” on the campaign trail who has insulted several of her opponents.
When he was reminded that Murtala Mohammed also responded in equal measure, Alban Babgin, who is also the MP for Nadowli-Kaleo, said that insults are not something to be encouraged, especially when the tag 'honourable' has been bestowed on the people issuing them.
He said the MPs must begin to control their tempers before speaking.
The Nadowli-Kaleo MP also called for the institution of a code of conduct to regulate the behaviour of MPs in the House.
